In this edition of the Career Perspectives series, I interview Malte Stein, Senior Biostatistician. Malte owned the development of an application for Cytel’s Cytemation Initiative that focuses on the development of tools and processes that improve speed, efficiency, and quality. In this interview, Malte talks about his experience of working at Cytel, the focus on integrated project management, and the necessary qualifications to work here as a biostatistician.
Can you give us a little background on your career and your journey so far?
When I was still studying, I worked as a data analyst at an insurance company, with a focus on reporting optimization. After completing my master’s degree in statistics from Otto-von-Guericke University in Germany, I started working with Parexel as a Biostatistician. I joined Cytel in 2020 and have been enjoying the experience of working here ever since.
What is your role at Cytel and what do you like best about it?
I work as a Senior Biostatistician at Cytel and I am currently involved in several projects for the Cytemation Initiative, a strategic program that aims to deploy automation across existing processes and tools through implementation and adoption of enabling technology.
I love being creative, innovative, and working in a team. The culture at Cytel encourages all of this and allows me to be a part of the end-to-end process, starting from the conception of an idea to finally seeing its results and the impact on the company.
Can you speak to the integrated approach followed at Cytel and the ways our statisticians, programmers, and data managers collaborate on projects? How has this approach benefited our clients?
Cytel’s integrated project management approach enables our teams to collaborate closely to deliver great value and a seamless experience for our clients and the internal stakeholders. I recently led the development of an internal application that was not only planned as a standalone tool for our statisticians, but also to harmonize and standardize the collaboration between statisticians and programmers. Client-specific standards were integrated into this application and that improved the working hours, quality, and consistency across their study.
What combination of knowledge, skills, and technical competencies are required to work as a biostatistician at Cytel?
The key skills Cytel looks for in statisticians are teamwork, the ability to understand study data, some programming skills, and, of course, general statistical knowledge.
What excites you about working in this field and at Cytel?
I like the great teamwork within Cytel and the various assignments I get to take up as a Biostatistician. Especially, in the Cytemation Initiative, I can be creative, innovative, and tap into my full potential, because Cytel is willing to improve and change processes. Hence, I find Cytel an exciting place to work, with many career opportunities and a healthy work-life balance.
What are your main interests outside of work?
I enjoy spending time in my garden and engaging in sports like tennis, hiking, and bicycling.
