Congratulations to Germany for a fantastic World Cup victory! Records broken and beautiful moments marked this World Cup as extraordinary. We are excited to celebrate this achievement with all of our German colleagues and friends. As the attached article shows, Germany was up against some (statistically) impossible phenomena in the figure of Lionel Messi.  

Despite failing to clinch the title for Argentina, Lionel Messi  played a wonderful tournament and won the Golden Ball. Read here, in a fun analysis by our statistical colleagues at fivethirtyeight.com, why he is remains one of the greatest. No wonder Argentina's hopes were riding on him!

Another analysis by fivethirtyeight.com uses ELOs and Goal Differentials to argue that Germany may be the "Best National Soccer Team Ever." Does this seem like a reasonable measurement to you?
