What are exact tests?
StatXact and LogXact utilize Cytel-developed exact statistical methods. Exact tests are hypothesis tests guaranteed to preserve the test's Type I error rate. In other words, these tests, when applied to a null model, will not produce "significant" results more than 5% of the time, if the test is conducted at the .05 level of significance.

At the heart of most exact procedures lie permutation procedures in which the data are repeatedly rearranged (permuted) and the test statistic recalculated. Unlike standard procedures, which rely on approximations to the sampling distribution of a statistic, permutation procedures produce exact sampling distributions.

Why utilize exact tests?
Using superior exact procedures, statisticians can better solve problems and submit acceptable results to peer reviewers, regulators and courts that increasingly prefer use of exact methods over approximations.
