CYTEL SOFTWARE ANNOUNCES RANGANATH NAYAK AS CEO AND STEVE HERBERT as VP SALES AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

CAMBRIDGE, MA - August 18, 2004 - Cytel Inc. announced today that Ranganath Nayak has joined the company as Chief Executive Officer, and Steve Herbert as Vice President of Sales and Business Development.

Dr. Nayak brings over 30 years of senior level management experience to Cytel. He served as CEO of Auripay, Inc., a company providing software for secure on-line purchasing with credit cards. Previously a senior executive with The Boston Consulting Group and Arthur D. Little, Inc., he has significant experience building businesses and setting strategy in technology-intensive companies. He is the co-author of Product Juggernauts: How Companies Mobilize to Generate a Stream of Market Winners, (Harvard Business School Press), and principal author of Breakthroughs!, a best-selling study of wildly successful commercial innovations. He is active in mentoring startups at The IndUS Entrepreneurs (TIE) and at the MIT Venture Mentoring Service. He received a Doctorate in Engineering from MIT.

"I know that Cytel’s analytic capabilities and the software we build using those capabilities can make a huge improvement in the return on investment that pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device companies get from clinical trials,” said Dr. Nayak. “I look forward to working with the Cytel Team to make that a reality.”

Mr. Herbert has had revenue responsibility for a number of scientific software ventures including Accelrys, a leading simulation and informatics provider, and OmniViz, an advanced visual informatics software provider. Under his sales and marketing leadership, Accelrys became the industry's fastest growing and most prominent supplier of molecular modeling software, with revenues exceeding $100 million. Mr. Herbert led the post-merger integration of six companies with uninterrupted sales growth and helped transfer the company from private to public ownership in 1998, creating over $2.6 billion of shareholder value. He is a graduate of York University and Harvard University’s Extension School.

"Cytel came into prominence in the clinical trials field when Professors Dr. Nitin Patel and Dr. Cyrus Mehta made important breakthroughs in the field of computational statistics which are revolutionizing the way clinical trials are conducted. Cytel is addressing an economically important and scientifically profound set of problems for the biopharmaceutical industry,” said Mr. Herbert. "I'm looking forward to being a part of the team at Cytel at the beginning of this exciting period in the company's growth."

"We are pleased to bring someone with Ranganath’s integrity, management background and strategic leadership skills to the company,” said Cytel founder Dr. Cyrus Mehta. “Ranganath strengthens our management team by bringing critical executive expertise. The addition of Steve, who has an impressive track record of success in scientific software markets, underscores Cytel’s commitment to strengthening its sales and business development capabilities. Creating a strong leadership team is important to our shareholders, our customers, and our employees."
